Celebrates Valentine's Day with Love The Masque Theatre, Muizenberg welcomes the Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society which will be presenting a Valentine’s Day Concert on Sunday 14 February 2010 at 3pm.
The Society is well known in and around Cape
Town for their very high standard of singing and performing. The Valentine’s Day programme at the Masque Theatre includes several well-known songs from the Gilbert and Sullivan canon, as well as some longer extracts from the operas, all appropriately related to some aspect of love. This entertaining concert will be conducted by Mike Nixon, who has been associated with the Society for many years. The accompanist on piano is Helen Broekmann, and narration is by Lorna Hansen. “The truth is”, says Lorna, “that you don’t have to ask us twice to sing – we love doing it, and are always happy to perform. Our Gilbert and Sullivan Society provides us with a unique opportunity to achieve high standards while also having lots of fun.” Tickets are R60 (Masque Theatre Club Members enjoy a R10 discount). To book phone 021 788 1898 (09h00 – 16h00 during the week and 08h30 to 11h30 on Saturdays.
Ayckbourn fantasizes at the Masque Alan Ayckbourn, the prince of satirical comedy, lightens up with the delightful play “Improbable Fiction”, directed by award-winning Coleen van Staden for MADS. It opens at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg, on Friday 5 February 2010.
This zany comedy looks at the fears, longings and literary aspirations of a dysfunctional writers' circle. Ayckbourn turns the serious business of writing on its head with a gentle but fun-filled poke at a number of contrasting literary genres. With a clap of thunder, he plunges these would-be authors into a crazy world of their own unfulfilled aspirations – complete with goblins, detectives, Victorian ladies and aliens. Alan Ayckbourn's “Improbable Fiction”, with a talented cast of seven, runs from Friday 5 February to Saturday 13 February (excluding Sunday-Wednesday). Weekdays are at 20:00 and Saturdays are at 14:30 and 18:30. Tickets are R50 for Thursday nights and matinees and R60 for other evenings (Masque Theatre Club Members enjoy a R10 discount). To book phone 021 788 1898 (between 9:00 and 16:00 during the week and 08:30 and 11:30 on Saturdays)
Masque Theatre welcomes After the successful celebration of its 75th birthday in November 2009, the Cape Town City Ballet continues to enthral audiences with their extensive repertoire and versatility. This will be showcased at the Masque Theatre from Thursday 18 to Saturday 20 February 2010 with a presentation of “Les Sylphides” and “A Connoisseur's Delight”.
“Les Sylphides” is set in a moonlit park and is a reproduction of the late Cecily Robinson's version of the popular work. The ballet consists of sylphs in white romantic tutus dancing in the moonlight with a poet, to the romantic strains of Chopin's music. Laura Bosenberg, Angela Hansford, Megan Swart, Janine Laidlow, Melanie Seeger and Lauren Rogers will dance the various technically-challenging solos, while Robin van Wyk and Thomas Thorne will dance the role of the Poet. “A Connoisseur's Delight” is a selection of excerpts and pas de deux from several ballets, including “La Bayadere”, “Don Quixote” and “Flower Festival”. Also to be seen is “Meditation”, the solo written by David Poole for Ann Wixley in 1988, in homage to one of the greatest ballerinas of the 20th century, Anna Pavlova, and danced on this occasion by Lauren Rogers. This programme is sure to please all ballet followers and send them home asking for more. The shows are on Thursday 18, Friday 19 and Saturday 20 February. Weekdays are at 20h00 and Saturday at 14h30 and 18h30. Tickets for evenings are R60 and R50 for Saturday matinee (Masque Theatre Club members enjoy a R10 discount).
