Shakespeare’s “Macbeth”

William Shakespeare’s text has the extraordinary ability to travel through time and space and retain its relevance. The issues it deals with are every bit as real in the 21st century as they were in the 11th.. Tyranny and fascism still raise their heads in varying forms in our modern world.

MacBeth
Maridi Jooste and Faeron Wheeler

“Macbeth” is a tale of lies, manipulation and treachery.  Britain, at war with itself, sees the rise of a would-be fascist dictator, driven by his manipulative wife. Wicked spells and treachery are the order of the day as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth seize their chance to rule.

A feast of poetry and prose by the Bard of Stratford, Shakespeare’s play is as pertinent now as it was when it was first written.

This production of  “Macbeth” is set to a rousing soundscape and rich lighting with stage design by  Vivienne Gray.

Directed by Clifford Graham (who also plays Macbeth) and co-directed by Brenda Gray,  “Macbeth” opens at the Masque Theatre on Friday 1 and runs until Saturday 9 July (excluding Sunday to Wednesday).

Week nights are at 8pm and Saturdays at 2.30 and 6.30pm.

Ticket prices for matinees and Thursday evenings are R50 and for other evenings are R60 (Masque Theatre Club Members enjoy a R10 discount).

Jungle Theatre Company presents River of Life at the Masque

Jungle Theatre Company’s Laduma Jungle trainees present River of Life from 4-9 July at the Masque Theatre, thanks to the generous support of the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.

River Of Life is an African fairy tale about a rural tribe and a special princess, who live by a beautiful river full of magical creatures. A glittering dancing trader comes from the city to sell the villagers strange items that cause problems for the river. The princess goes on an adventure through a parched desert an enchanted forest and up a mighty mountain. She learns to speak the language of the river creatures in order to save the river for all.

River of Life was created by the Laduma Jungle trainees as part of a 2 year skills development and job creation programme Laduma Jungle Training, funded by NLDTF. This is the first production workshopped by the young team that come from Ocean View, Langa and Khayelitsha. The Laduma team: Candice Waries, Nokubonga Jita, Cebisa Fubesi, Stacey Francke, Siyawandisa Badi, Athenkosi Dyantyi, Vuyolwethu Stuurman and Seyiso Qhola all perform in the show, which has two casts. The play was directed by Vincent Meyburgh with assistance from Nimray Kruger and Mfundo Hashe.

River of Life is best suited for children 5 to 10 years old but “Great fun for all the family,” as said by Laduma Jungle trainee Candice Waries of Ocean View.

Tickets are R30 and can be booked via the Masque Theatre booking line: 021 788 1898 office hours only.
